Mads Hermansen has been a brilliant signing since joining the Foxes during their initial EFL Championship campaign. The Danish goalkeeper has offered a quality series of displays for the King Power Club as he passes well, makes good decisions in coming out of his box, and has swift reactions to chances taken on his goal.
It is unsurprising that the Dane is one of those most expected to leave Leicester when the summer transfer window opens, with high-profile clubs interested in getting a goalkeeper that takes on a sweeping role. Financially, the Foxes might end up being forced into sanctioning a move regardless of whether they really want to or not. As such, they must find possible solutions.
In the likely event Hermansen departs in the summer, Leicester City will have several decisions to make. Firstly, they must consider the fate of their unused duo Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen. The pair are barely used, not in the good books of supporters, and do not play in a style conducive to what the club is looking for.
In the also likely event that at least one of them is sold as we do not need two backup goalkeepers on too high wages versus their lack of use, there remains the question of Jakub Stolarczyk. The Polish goalkeeper is a fan favourite, played well during both Premier League and cup fixtures during the Championship campaign, and is almost definitely staying.
In the best case scenario, Stolarczyk remains and the other three are either sold or one is relegated to third 'keeper duties. However, Nistelrooy's team may look in another direction to replace Hermansen with a more experienced Championship level goalkeeper capable of making good saves and also having a good long pass.
Apparently, that could be Illan Meslier. The Frenchman remains an important part of Leeds United, although his future is more uncertain at this time. Nevertheless, he does possess a composed mentality when between the sticks: Meslier has one of the lowest goals against and highest clean sheet percentages of any Championship goalkeeper.
Meslier has had a great career with Leeds. Their aggressive and pacy style of play suits the progressive possession approach favoured by the Dutch head coach and offers Leicester City the opportunity to more swiftly break on the counter with more accurate long balls. Those were the only weakness of Hermansen. Under pressure, passing well, the Frenchman could improve our chances of a quick return to the Premier League should that be the goal.
For Leicester, Meslier could have been a great signing a few seasons ago when Kasper Schmeichel had departed the King Power. However, in our current climate, it would be both insulting and stupid to sign a player expecting to be No.1 when you have Stolarczyk. The Pole deserves his chance as our No.1 proper, with the shirt to boot. Any signing in the transfer market has to be a secondary to Stolarczyk, not someone to play ahead of him.
Additionally, Meslier would not be a cheap player. The wages would be far greater than the Polish 'keeper, and on top of this the transfer fee could be anywhere from low (say around £10m) to too high (£20m) depending on how the Elland Road promoted side want to deal with the Premier League. That could be prohibitive to more important positions which require significant overhaul, such as centre-back and possibly striker. Leicester City ought to prioritise those positions over an unnecessary luxury.
