Manchester City could be subject to transfer interest from the Bundesliga in the remaining weeks of the summer market, with Stefan Ortega being monitored.

The German shot-stopper’s future at the Etihad Stadium has been a recurring talking point throughout the summer window, particularly as James Trafford was added to the senior ranks earlier in the market.

While City have so far managed to keep all goalkeepers in their squad, the dynamics of the department are expected to still change before the transfer deadline, with no requirement for three senior stars competing for one mainstay slot.

Stefan Ortega has been widely praised for his performances when called upon by Pep Guardiola, playing a crucial role during the club’s treble-winning 2022/23 season and stepping up in key matches last term.

However, with Ederson still firmly positioned as Manchester City’s mainstay No. 1 and James Trafford now returning from Burnley, Ortega faces the prospect of limited opportunities in 2025/26 and is likely to be encouraged to seek out a new opportunity.

That situation could prove pivotal for the 32-year-old, who has ambitions of representing Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Regular game time between now and then will be essential for him to make the squad, meaning a return to the Bundesliga may become an increasingly attractive option.

And according to the information of The Mirror’s Simon Mullock, there is transfer interest within the Bundesliga for the Manchester City goalkeeper.

For Ortega, the decision may hinge on whether he receives assurances over his role this season. While Pep Guardiola values his reliability and professionalism, there is no escaping the fact that Ederson’s presence limits his pathway to becoming a regular starter in Manchester.

With the Bundesliga transfer window still open and German clubs actively scouting goalkeeping reinforcements, the coming weeks could see concrete offers emerge for Ortega.

If Manchester City grant him an exit as expected, it would mark the end of a successful but relatively short-lived spell at the Etihad – one defined by silverware, composure under pressure, and the challenge of playing in the shadow of one of the world’s best keepers.

As for James Trafford, the exit of Ortega will only increase his dependancy in cup competitions in particular, and create a clear pathway to becoming Manchester City’s No.1 shot-stopper perhaps as soon as next summer – with Ederson’s deal expiring in 2026.
