Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (27) chances of starting for Real Madrid against his former club Liverpool have been significantly boosted following Dani Carvajal’s knee surgery, which is expected to sideline the Real captain for several weeks, Sky Sports reports.

The Spanish champions confirmed on Tuesday that Carvajal “underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee,” leaving Alexander-Arnold in line to make a high-profile return to Anfield in next Tuesday’s Champions League clash.

The 27-year-old England international only recently returned from a hamstring injury, featuring in Real’s El Clásico victory over Barcelona at the weekend, his first appearance since mid-September. With just three starts this season, Alexander-Arnold has endured a stop-start beginning to life in Madrid following his £10m summer move from Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave Merseyside was one of last summer’s biggest transfer shocks, and his limited game time under Xabi Alonso has led to questions about his long-term role in Spain. However, with Carvajal unavailable, the stage appears set for the Liverpool academy graduate to face the club where he spent two decades, in what promises to be an emotionally charged reunion.
