Former Hartlepool United and Portsmouth goalkeeper Trevor Carson has been forced to retire due to a knee injury, a little over a month after agreeing to join Queen of the South.
The club said in a statement on Sunday that the 38-year-old, Nicky Clark’s first signing, had decided to retire after a tough pre-season because of the injury. It added he could not guarantee his fitness for the full campaign and had stepped aside early to allow time to find a replacement.
The eight-times capped Northern Ireland international began his career at Sunderland, gaining senior experience on loan at Chesterfield, Lincoln City and Hull City, then left in the summer of 2012 without a first-team appearance.
He returned to the North East in 2015 with Hartlepool after a spell at Cheltenham Town, making 63 appearances across two years. He helped Pools reach the FA Cup third round in 2016 before a 2-1 home defeat to Derby County, whose side included Darren Bent and Andi Weimann.
Carson moved to Motherwell and stayed in Scotland with Dundee United, St Mirren, Ross County and Dundee.
