“Trophies create authority”: Arne Slot fires back at Rooney criticism
Arne Slot responded strongly to Wayne Rooney’s comments saying trophies not image define manager’s authority at Liverpool.
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has firmly answered criticism from former England striker Wayne Rooney who questioned whether Slot has the “aura” needed to succeed at Liverpool after the departure of Jurgen Klopp.
Rooney had stated earlier this week that Slot lacks the presence required to lead Liverpool in the post Klopp era. The Dutch coach addressed those remarks in comments published by The Guardian making his position clear.
Slot stressed that success on the pitch is what gives coach authority. He said managers are all different and that the main thing he shares with Klopp is winning the league adding that this is not bad thing.
The Liverpool coach explained that the more manager wins, the more influence he has. He also suggested that public opinion can change quickly pointing out that people might say he had more impact last season than he does now depending on results.
Slot admitted that Klopp clearly has strong presence but repeated his belief that winning trophies creates its own aura, regardless of personality or style.
Slot also spoke about the pressure managers face today. He said intense media attention means coaches are given less time making it harder to stay in job for as long as Klopp did at Liverpool or Pep Guardiola has at Manchester City.
According to Slot, football has changed and long-term projects are now more difficult because results are judged almost immediately.
