Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero has hinted at displeasure with how the club handled his injury problems earlier this season.

Romero has recently returned to fitness after missing most of the last four months with ankle, toe and hamstring issues. That absence, combined with many others also being sidelined, has been a major reason why the club are on course for a worst Premier League finish in 20 years.

The pressure has piled on manager Ange Postecoglou, who hasn't been able to call on his best team.

Romero played 90 minutes of Argentina's World Cup qualifying win over Uruguay, only his second full game since 10 November. But his praise of the national team's medical department can also be interpreted as a withering put down of the Tottenham equivalent.

"I didn't have a good few months because it was an injury that I could have returned much sooner from," Romero told reporters in Montevideo.

"I'm always grateful that the national team's medical team was able to get me out of that bad moment and get me back on the field, which is what I like to do."

AS journalist Eduardo Burgos went as far as saying that Romero is "deeply upset" by how Tottenham have handled the injury and that "trouble is brewing".

The 26-year-old is a vice-captain at Spurs but speculation about transfer interest from Real Madrid is starting to build. The European champions haven't recruited a centre-back since 2022 and Eder Militao was the last central defender to arrive for a fee more than half a decade ago. That approach has come back to bite them this season and a signing is expected.

Romero is obviously a native Spanish speaker but his senior club career to date following a breakthrough at Argentine side Belgrano has been spent in Italy and England.
