England were in action against Andorra last time out as four Gunners featured from the start. The Three Lions maintained their flawless record in World Cup qualifying with a 2-0 win. Two Arsenal players contributed directly to both goals, with Noni Madueke’s cross forcing an own goal for the opener, while Declan Rice arrived at the far post to head home Reece James’ pinpoint delivery in the 67th minute. Eberechi Eze and Myles Lewis-Skelly also started, helping England continue their perfect run.

Tuchel’s mixed assessment of Arsenal stars

Despite Madueke being one of England’s brighter players on the night, Thomas Tuchel delivered a less flattering verdict. Speaking via TalkSport, the England manager said: “Yes, that’s what he needs to give. He sometimes has a lack of concentration or falls asleep in counter-pressing, but if he pushes himself he can be a very important player. Bukayo [Saka] at the moment is injured for Arsenal and us so that is what he needs to do.”

Tuchel was also left unimpressed with the displays of both Eze and Marcus Rashford in the attack. He explained: “I think we missed the little moments to accelerate the game. Maybe Ebz [Eberechi Eze] didn’t have his best day in the No.10 position. He trained so well in the decision making, but struggled a little bit. The last pass from Noni, the last decision from Noni wasn’t clinical enough and Marcus Rashford had some good moments, but couldn’t finish them with a clinical assist. It’s stuff that can happen against a narrow 5-4-1 [formation]. We should have scored the second one earlier, because the second goal gave us a lot of freedom and players moved with a bit more confidence.”

Encouragement for Arsenal fans

England dominated possession, recording over 80 per cent, yet were guilty of being passive as they struggled to create clear-cut chances. Even so, Madueke showed flashes of the unpredictability that makes him such an exciting option for both club and country.

Eze on the other hand found it difficult to make an impact, something Arsenal supporters will hope does not become a recurring theme this season. England now face Serbia on Tuesday in their second World Cup qualifier of the break, before meeting Latvia on 14th October.

Thoughts on Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke’s Three Lions performances?
