On 4 April 2006, OL suffered a late 3-1 defeat at AC Milan in a Champions League quarter-final, after a 0-0 first leg in Gerland.

An away goal had briefly put OL on course to advance, but they conceded in the closing stages and the tie slipped away. Around 10,000 Lyon fans at San Siro were left desolate. According to Le Progres, it was one of OL’s biggest Champions League nights, albeit a painful one.

Seven days earlier, the first leg at Gerland finished 0-0, and the absence of Juninho through suspension was felt.

OL arrived in Lombardy in fine form. They had seen off PSV Eindhoven in the last 16, avenging the previous season’s penalty shootout exit.

They were on a good run, having won 0-1 at Troyes before heading to Lombardy.
