Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe has a team dedicated to carefully managing his image, branding an social media presence. The alarm bells must have been ringing at maximum volume as his Twitter/X account was hacked on Wednesday night during the early hours of the morning.

Mbappe’s account was taken over by an as of yet unknown hacker, and as published by MD, used for a variety of purposes for the space of 20 minutes. Part of it was to promote a cryptocurrency called $MBAPPE, which reportedly soared in value momentarily and then crashed again.

The account was also used to abuse Lionel Messi, while tweeting out ‘Manchester is red’ and ‘I lied to you, I am going to Manchester United. In 2028, I will go there for free.’ Further posts also included anti-semitic feeling including ‘The Jews are the owners of football’ , while also saying ‘F*** Israel’ and ‘Free Palestine’, hinting both at the hackers football and political preferences.

The posts were deleted after a spell of 20 minutes. According to CoinPedia, the value of the cryptocurrency rose to tens of millions of dollars, with one user making the equivalent value of $200k (€180.5k) from $286 (€258). The value of $MBAPPE then returned to zero in less than an hour.
