Inter Miami clinched the MLS Championship for the first time in the club’s history after composed 3-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps in the final on Saturday night at Lockhart Stadium.

Lionel Messi played the full 90 minute delivering two assist as Miami’s project reached its long awaited breakthrough moment.

How the final unfolded

Inter Miami took the lead after just eight minute when Vancouver defender Edier Ocampo turned the ball into his own net. The Canadian side found lifeline in the 60 minute, with Ali Ahmed equalising after well worked move.

But Miami responded with authority.

  1. 71’ — 2-1: Messi’s precision pass set up Rodrigo De Paul who guided the ball into the bottom corner.
  2. 96’ — 3-1: Messi again delivered the final assist finding Tadeo Allende to seal the championship deep into stoppage time.

Speaking to Eurosport, Messi reflected on the significance of winning Inter Miami’s first ever MLS title:

“It is special & emotional moment for us and for the people of Miami. This was our real goal to reach the top of the league. thankfully we achieved it.”

He added:

“Playing at home made this joy even bigger for the fans. We have to enjoy this moment.”

A farewell for Busquets & Alba

The match marked the final professional appearance of Messi’s long time teammates Sergio Busquets & Jordi Alba who will both retire at the end of the season.

Messi paid heartfelt tribute:

“We arrived here together from the start. Winning this title together was our goal. I’m so happy they get to leave like this.. celebrating championship. They are my best friends. I’m grateful to have shared almost my whole career with them.”

A historic milestone for Messi and MLS

The achievement adds another chapter to Messi’s extraordinary career. After winning league titles in Spain (Barcelona) & France (PSG) he now lifts domestic crown in US.

Messi moved to Inter Miami in the summer of 2023 and under his influence, leadership and creativity, the club now transformed from new expansion side to MLS champions.
