Real Madrid head into their upcoming clash with Rayo Vallecano facing a number of problems, and the latest blow has come in the form of Aurelien Tchouameni’s injury.

The midfielder’s setback comes at a crucial time, joining Franco Mastantuono, Dani Carvajal and Antonio Rudiger on the sidelines.

His absence is particularly significant because of his importance in Alonso’s tactical setup.

Alonso has relied heavily on Tchouameni’s ability to shield the defence and dictate play from deep, meaning his injury forces another reshuffle just days before the trip to Vallecas Stadium.

Finding the balance

For Alonso, the first challenge lies in finding balance without disrupting the team’s rhythm.

The return of Trent Alexander-Arnold offers a glimmer of hope, allowing Federico Valverde to move back into his natural midfield role.

That flexibility could prove crucial as Madrid try to recover from their disappointing Champions League defeat, where the team appeared disjointed and short of energy.

Tactically, Alonso faces a major decision. He must decide whether to return to the traditional 4-3-3 or stick with the 4-4-2 system he has used in high-profile matches such as the derby, El Clasico, and the clash with Liverpool.

Mastantuono’s injury complicates things further, as the youngster was often deployed as the third attacker in that setup.

Managing players’ fitness

If Alonso opts for a four-man midfield, Arda Guler could keep his place, though his fitness remains in question after being substituted at half-time against Valencia and showing signs of fatigue at Anfield.

Valverde also finished the Liverpool game with a minor knock, meaning Alonso may choose to rest him.

Should the Uruguayan be rested, Camavinga, Ceballos, Rodrygo, and Brahim Diaz would battle for three starting spots.

Ultimately, Alonso has several options but limited stability, but it is certain that after a frustrating European night, the Real Madrid manager is expected to field his strongest available lineup.
