Arsenal will begin their Champions League campaign against Athletic Club without two of their most influential players, as Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka have both been ruled out of the tie. Their absence represents a significant setback, although the Gunners will look to rely on the strength of their squad to overcome the challenge in Spain.
Saka has been sidelined since sustaining an injury in the match against Leeds United and is expected to remain out for a prolonged period. Arsenal are determined not to rush his recovery, given his importance to the team and the need to protect him for the remainder of the season. Odegaard, meanwhile, was forced to leave the pitch before half time in the game against Nottingham Forest due to a shoulder problem. Hopes that he might recover in time for the Champions League opener have now been dashed.
According to ESPN, Odegaard has not managed to shake off his discomfort, meaning he will not feature in the upcoming fixture. For Arsenal, this means they must approach the contest without the creativity and leadership of their captain, as well as the energy and attacking threat provided by Saka.
The injuries underline the challenges of competing on multiple fronts, where maintaining player fitness is as important as tactical preparation. Although their absence is a blow, Arsenal’s improved depth across midfield and attack ensures that Arteta still has options available to him. The expectation within the club remains that the side should secure a positive result regardless of these setbacks.

Athletic Club will undoubtedly prove difficult opponents, especially on home soil, where their intensity and determination often pose problems for visiting sides. Arsenal, however, have assembled a group of players capable of rising to the occasion and will view this fixture as an opportunity for others to step forward in the absence of two established stars.
The importance of making a strong start in the Champions League cannot be overstated. A win in Spain would set the tone for the remainder of the group stage, while defeat would risk creating unnecessary pressure ahead of future matches. Even without Odegaard and Saka, Arsenal possess the quality to deliver a performance that signals their intent in Europe this season.
