So far this season, Savinho and Jeremy Doku have shown signs of growth as players, which is great news for Manchester City. Savinho started this season slowly, but his form has improved markedly over recent matches. He was arguably Manchester City’s man-of-the-match in their 2-nil win over Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceràmica. Jeremy Doku put in a string of quality performances against Manchester United, Napoli, Arsenal and Burnley. But his form has tapered off in recent matches.
While Savinho and Jeremy Doku have had their moments this season, both players are far from the finished article. They are both young and need time to develop the required consistency in their play.
Pep Guardiola singled out Savinho for praise when speaking ahead of Manchester City’s Premier League fixture against Aston Villa. He believes the Brazilian international has the potential to become a top-class winger. But Guardiola did say that Savinho needs to add goals to his game. Speaking on Savinho, Pep Guardiola said: “Savio is a top player who can play both sides and he feels comfortable on both sides. I said last season, being [in your] first Premier League season, it’s not easy to play a lot of minutes. Just the moment to make the steps to be a decisive player and add goals and assists, especially goals, he will be a top-class player. Top class. He needs to make that step.”
In an interview published on mancity.com, Jeremy Doku explained that he is learning when to slow the game down. Doku is an all-action winger, but he is learning how to play the Manchester City way. He explained: “There are a lot of things I learn daily, but the biggest thing is, when I arrived, I was younger and had a lot of energy and always wanted to go forward, but what I’ve learned is that sometimes you need to know the moments in the game to be more mature and calm down.”
“It’s something I’ve improved on. We keep improving because we know everyone has the quality to play – if you want to play, you need to be on point every time.”

There are signs that Jeremy Doku and Savinho are maturing and growing as players. So far this season, each player has had their moments where they have been almost unplayable. They have also both had moments where they haven’t been able to get into games. That is the life of a young player, and it can happen to wingers depending on how games pan out. What has stood out is that Doku and Savinho, when on form, look like infinitely more dangerous players as they mature and develop.
Manchester City will be hoping that both players continue to grow and mature throughout this season. At their best, Savinho and Jeremy Doku can be valuable attacking weapons for Pep Guardiola’s side. With their dribbling ability and speed, they can take games away from Manchester City’s opponents. If the pair can add consistency and goals to their games, they’ll be top-class wingers.
Savinho and Jeremy Doku have shown glimpses of their quality so far this season. They both have obvious areas in their game which they must improve. They are both young, so they should improve in time as neither player is the finished article just yet.
