Deadline day was quiet from a Manchester United first team perspective except for a bizarre scenario involving Tyrell Malacia.
The Dutchman, a member of the bomb squad, failed to secure a summer move away and was subsequently included in United’s Premier League squad.
He even earned minutes against Newcastle, but gametime was always expected to be limited. Hence, news emerged that the former Feyenoord ace was on his way to Turkiye on deadline day.
While the identity of the club was not made public, director of football Jason Wilcox called the fullback back and cancelled the deal.
That left the defender heartbroken. It has since been revealed by Talksport that the Turkish team in question was Besiktas.
“Tyrell Malacia looks set to stay put in Manchester after a last-minute intervention. Malacia was about to board a plane bound for Turkey ahead of completing a move to Besiktas on Monday.”
However, as per The Daily Mail, a transfer was far from close and that the player was told well in advance that his services might be required by Michael Carrick.
With Patrick Dorgu injured, and Luke Shaw‘s injury record not too great, Tyrell Malacia might be required to step up and, as a result, the Red Devils did not want to lose him midseason.
“United were as surprised as anyone to see reports in Holland suggesting that Malacia was about to board a flight to Turkey to undergo a medical when he received a call from director of football Jason Wilcox informing him that the move had been aborted.
“Malacia, who was said to be in ‘disbelief’, was allegedly told to report back to Carrington. The supposed transfer twist put United in a difficult position because they don’t want to be seen to be falling out with the player and his camp after Malacia returned to the first-team fold this season.
“But sources tell Confidential that no deal was ever agreed with a Turkish club, let alone to the point of organising a medical, and United had not made any travel plans for the 26-year-old defender. They were reluctant to even discuss the identity of the club because any deal was so far from completion.
“The saga is all the more odd because Malacia and his camp have been aware since Patrick Dorgu suffered a hamstring injury at Arsenal nine days ago that he would be needed to provide cover for Luke Shaw at left-back.”
Tyrell Malacia is expected to depart as a free agent in the summer. Hopefully, Carrick does not need to call upon the 26-year-old’s services.
The Netherlands international has lost a lot of pace since his horror injury, and now looks a shadow of the player former manager Erik ten Hag had signed.
