UEFA concerned about potential Vinicius-Prestianni confrontation before Real Madrid vs Benfica | OneFootball

Tension is building ahead of the upcoming UEFA Champions League showdown between Real Madrid and Benfica, and the focus is not purely tactical. 

According to a report from Cadena SER, UEFA are closely monitoring the situation involving Vinicius Jr. and Gianluca Prestianni.

The concern is not about what might happen during open play, but before the ball even moves.

Internally, UEFA officials reportedly fear that the two players may refuse to shake hands during the traditional pre-match protocol. 

While it may seem symbolic, such a gesture carries weight at the European level. For UEFA, the opening ceremony is about respect, unity and protecting the image of the competition. 

Any visible tension between players could send the wrong message worldwide.

One scenario reportedly being discussed is the possibility of sanctioning Prestianni to prevent him from featuring in the match. 

However, such a decision would be highly unusual at this stage, which is why an official statement is expected in the coming days to clarify whether any action will be taken.

The situation comes from the recent Champions League encounter between Real Madrid and Benfica, where tensions escalated between Vinicius and the young Benfica midfielder. 

The aftermath has generated significant media coverage, adding extra pressure to an already high-stakes playoff tie.

As reported earlier today, Prestianni attempted to calm the situation internally. Before Sunday’s training session, he gathered his teammates to apologise for the distraction created in the days following the incident. 

The midfielder is said to have acknowledged the noise around the issue and the impact it may have had on teammates and coaching staff.

Despite this, Prestianni has made it clear that he feels personally wronged. He has stated that he is “very offended” by the Real Madrid forward, believing the accusations made against him have seriously harmed his reputation.
