A Europa League Final between a team led by the master of this competition and a modest German team that has never won a major honor in its history is going to be a spectacle in Istanbul. Wednesday, May 20, 2026. Aston Villa vs Freiburg. A final at the Beşiktas Stadium that reminds us why we fell in love with European club soccer in the first place.
Unai Emery’s love story with this competition never seems to end. Three consecutive titles with Sevilla in 2014, 2015 and 2016, a heart-wrenching final loss with Arsenal in 2019, and a miraculous triumph with Villarreal over Manchester United in 2021. Wednesday will mark the Basque tactician’s sixth appearance in a Europa League Final.
When Emery arrived at Villa Park in late 2022, he inherited a squad lacking direction and a fanbase starved of continental success since their legendary 1982 European Cup victory. Now it is May 2026, and Villa are unstoppable. They recently dismantled Arne Slot’s Liverpool 4-2 in the Premier League to secure Champions League soccer for next season, affording Emery the luxury of resting his stars and focusing entirely on Istanbul.
Under Emery, Villa reached the Conference League semifinals in 2024, the Champions League quarterfinals last season, and now the Europa League Final. It has been a steady climb under a manager who knows exactly how to navigate Europe’s knockout nights.
Villa’s route to the final was not easy either. They finished second in the League Phase and then blew past Lille in the Round of 16, winning 3-0 on aggregate. They followed it up by demolishing Bologna 7-1 on aggregate in the quarterfinals, signaling themselves as favorites for the trophy. After that, they faced a tense all-English semifinal against Nottingham Forest. A 1-0 first-leg defeat at the City Ground, courtesy of a Chris Wood penalty, raised questions about Villa, but a masterclass at Villa Park in the return leg, resulting in a ruthless 4-0 annihilation, secured Emery’s entry into his sixth Europa League Final. Emery is now on the edge of his fifth title, with the chance to bring European glory back to the Claret and Blue half of Birmingham after 44 years.
If Aston Villa represents the reawakening of a giant, SC Freiburg is the triumph of the little guy. A feel-good story that every soccer fan would love. In a time where soccer is increasingly dominated by state-backed funding and multi-club conglomerates, Freiburg operates differently.
Nestled in the southwest corner of Germany, Freiburg has long been famous for its university, its eco-friendly initiatives, and a soccer club that consistently punches above its weight despite never winning anything major. When the legendary Christian Streich stepped down in 2024, many pundits assumed the club’s golden era would fade. But under the guidance of Julian Schuster, Freiburg has continued to build on Streich’s foundations, and the results are now there for all to see.
They do not boast a squad of $60 million superstars. Their highest earners make a fraction of what Aston Villa’s bench players take home. But Freiburg’s journey to Istanbul has been nothing short of cinematic.
They finished seventh in the League Phase, narrowly securing automatic qualification to the knockout rounds. In the Round of 16, they overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Genk with a 5-1 thrashing in Germany. In the quarterfinals, they dismantled Celta Vigo 6-1 on aggregate. But it was their semifinal against SC Braga that truly made the world take notice. After losing 2-1 away in Portugal, Freiburg returned to the Europa-Park Stadion needing a monumental performance. Roared on by a passionate home crowd, they secured a dramatic 3-1 victory, booking their ticket to Turkey.
For a club of Freiburg’s stature, just reaching a European final is a monumental achievement. But I think just being here is not enough. Schuster’s men are not traveling to Istanbul merely to take part in the parade. They are going there to do everything they can to lift the trophy.
Amadou Onana’s participation in the final remains a doubt after the Aston Villa midfielder limped off the field in the semifinal. Douglas Luiz will probably slot into that role if Onana is not fit enough to start.
For Freiburg, Yuito Suzuki is out after suffering a fractured collarbone. That is a big blow for a team that will need every bit of attacking sharpness it can find against a Villa side that has looked ruthless throughout the competition.
My prediction for the Europa League Final: Unai Emery shows his class once again and dismantles a humble Freiburg side 3-0 to win his fifth Europa League trophy.
