Unai Emery has described Harvey Elliott’s stalled loan as embarrassing for all parties as Aston Villa prepare to face the midfielder’s parent club, Liverpool.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the Villa head coach said he apologises to Elliott in his mind every day and stressed that responsibility is shared between Villa and Liverpool.
Elliott, 23, has made just nine appearances since arriving on a season-long loan last September, totalling 109 minutes in the Premier League. The former England under-21 has spent much of the campaign on the fringes.
A clause in the agreement required Villa to buy him permanently for £30 million once he passed a set appearance threshold. Emery quickly chose not to trigger it, and Villa were unable to persuade Liverpool to remove the condition, leaving the player in limbo.
Speaking on Thursday, Emery added that this is not the moment to explain the reasoning, and that the season has been difficult on a human level.
