Still on the road back from Sevilla and running on no sleep, Miren Larrañaga reflected on a night her son, Unai Marrero, will never forget. According to Diario Vasco, the Real Sociedad goalkeeper broke down in tears as he embraced his mother and his partner after the Copa del Rey final, scenes widely shared online.
Larrañaga says this season she has seen a calmer, focused Unai, fully aware of the demands of his position. She points to daily discipline and patience, and believes he seized chances when they came.
She does not see this as sudden. In her view it is the product of years of fluctuating moments, collective and individual growth, and relentless work, with a sharp recent upturn.
Asked about what comes next, she envisages him on the pitch and clearly at Real Sociedad. She feels he still has plenty to prove, but that his passion, fight and heart are evident and will carry him forward.
Away from the grass, she sketches a tidy, sincere character with poise, close to family and friends, devoted to his grandmother. Despite a packed schedule, he makes time for those around him.
His story began on Garmendipe’s modest pitches in Azpeitia, first with Club Deportivo Ikasberri, then six years at Lagun Onak before stepping into Real’s cadete de honor. Former coach and current Lagun Onak president Iñigo Arregi recalls a natural goalkeeper’s profile, strong technique and work ethic, and feels Marrero projects calm and could become Real’s starter.
Home remains his anchor. Locals note he frequents the Charles Chaplin pub, likes to return to the village, spend rest days walking, reading and heading into the hills, and that as an 11-year-old he talked about keeping goal for Real, a dream that now seems within reach.
