Vasco are without a head coach, sit bottom of the Brasileirão after four rounds and trail in the Carioca semi-final. The board has entered a decisive phase to appoint a successor.
According to Globo.com, Pedrinho's hierarchy have Artur Jorge of Al-Rayyan as their unanimous first choice at São Januário, viewing him as the ideal tactical reset for a side they feel is disorganised. They believe he could make the team more competitive with and without the ball.
Jorge, however, is not looking to leave Al-Rayyan now. After contact from Vasco intermediaries, his camp indicated he wants to honour a deal running to June 2027, having only recently shaped the squad to his liking.
Some within the board think he could yet be dismissed, with Al-Rayyan currently outside the qualification places for an international competition. The club, though, accept they cannot wait and agree a swift replacement for Diniz is required.
Renato Gaúcho is also under consideration. The former Fluminense coach is unemployed and has responded positively to the interest, with fresh talks possible in the coming days with his staff. He was pursued by Pedrinho late in 2024.
Marcelo Gallardo appears a remote option. People close to the Argentine do not expect him to take another job immediately after leaving River Plate. On Thursday, the 50-year-old ended his second spell, the Monumental was packed as he was applauded before and after a 3-1 win over Banfield in the Argentine league.
