Instant fan / writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
I’m going to shout it out loud WE WON 4-0 AWAY IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!
So much to be happy about but special mention for Gordon’s performance and also a full Champions League debut goal for our ‘over priced’ idiot buy striker who isn’t a striker but keeps on scoring.
Can’t wait for Sunday and I’m sure the players feel the same way…’
Billy Miller:
‘We are up and running with our first away Champions League win since 2003.
It was better from Elanga and Gordon today, Elanga winning a pen and regularly threatening. Gordon dispatching both penalties and looking a lot more confident.
I’m guessing he’s our main penalty taker now.
Nice to see Barnes come on and wrap things up.
The way Woltemade links up play, our wingers will have a field day when they’re in full form.’
Mark Jankowski:
‘An emphatic away performance and a massive 3 points away in Europe.
Big performances from our big players, especially for Anthony Elanga, who’s beginning to show why we’ve pursued him for such a long time.
Time to capitalise on this win and build some momentum.’
GToon:
‘Wow.
For the first time in a while I’ve been able to enjoy a game from start to finish.
That was a very good performance against a side who are league champions and league leaders. I would suggest of league 1 in our league but that’s doing our team a disservice as we put the effort in to nullify the threat and then dismantle them.
Excellent performances from every player.
In big Nick we have some player. There was a moment at the start of the second half where he dummied and dragged the ball back and left 3 of their players wondering what had just happened. What a talent.
His link up play is exceptional. As good as Beardsley.
So a great result, money in the bank and confidence too.
Back in the game!’
Matt Busby said…:
‘That was a very accomplished victory in Brussels this evening and we are up and running in our Champions League campaign.
It was never in doubt, with some stand out performances from those in black and white – Tonali (as usual), Woltemade and our two central defenders looked very good tonight.
Add to that, this was our 5th clean sheet from nine league and cup matches this season.’
Davey Hat-Trick:
‘A professional, controlled performance, and three essential points to put us on the CL table.
A boost to the goal difference too.
Everyone put in a shift, without having to run themselves to exhaustion.
After the Arsenal disappointment, that will make everyone feel better.
The Elanga/Woltemade/Gordon combo looked potent.
Forest playing 24 hours after us is potentially good news and I fancy us to go into the international break on a high.
Well played lads. Benfica next in the CL at SJP – nowt to worry about.’
Jamie Smith:
‘Fantastic, a tonic to recent struggles and maybe the turning point we needed.
For the CL, we need to capitalise on this by winning our next couple of home games with Benfica and Bilbao, but for the season as a whole we need a settling three pts v Forest then a move into the break with hopefully some returns to fitness to boost the campaign.
Great night and jealous of those having a tremendous time in Brussels’
Simon Ritter:
‘Two players whose confidence looked in need of a boost scored three of our four goals but the star of the show was Big Nick Woltemade, whose control, vision and all-round play were almost as exceptional as his flick for the crucial first strike.
Next time somebody spouts meaningless stats, consider this: United have yet to concede away from home this season. Remarkable in itself.
Then remember this was only our third win in nine attempts. Roll on Sunday!’
David Punton:
‘A European away trip and a perfect away performance.
We are up and running in the Champions League in fine style – against a side we really did need to beat.
It was good to see we shrugged off Sunday’s last gasp defeat to put in such a professional display.
We just had too much for the Belgian side.
Hopefully this is the start of upturn for Anthony Gordon, who could easily have had a hat-trick.
Elanga was excellent and it was as good to see Botman looking back to his best alongside Thiaw.
For the travelling contingent it’s party time in Brussels.’
