Manchester United have made an exciting announcement involving club legend David de Gea ahead of his emotional return to Old Trafford this weekend.
De Gea left United in the summer of 2023 upon the expiry of his contract. Throughout the season, the goalkeeper was locked in talks with the club over a new deal, but then-manager Erik ten Hag eventually opted to get rid of him.
Ten Hag believed De Gea was not suited to his playing style, which called for a modern goalkeeper comfortable with the ball at their feet.
Due to his sudden departure, the Spaniard was denied the chance to say a proper goodbye to the fans. Instead, he had to post his farewell on social media, a gesture that always felt insufficient for a player of his stature, given his long-standing association with the Red Devils.
De Gea spent 12 seasons at United, amassing 545 appearances. More than 400 of these came in the Premier League. He won the Player of the Year award four times during his years of loyal service.
Now with Fiorentina, the 34-year-old is finally poised to play in front of the Old Trafford crowd once again, though this time in the colours of La Viola.
He recently expressed his excitement at returning to the Theatre of Dreams. Bruno Fernandes even sent him a cheeky message welcoming him ahead of Saturday’s pre-season fixture.
Earlier on Thursday, United confirmed that De Gea will be honoured before kick-off.
A club statement read, “Fans will have an opportunity to pay tribute to De Gea on his first return to M16. Pre-match, Bruno will make a presentation to his old team-mate to recognise De Gea’s contribution to the club.”
“Supporters are encouraged to get inside the ground early to see the presentation moment, which will take place shortly before kick-off.”
In response to Fernandes’ message, De Gea said, “Bruno, you know, you cannot score against me, and if you score, it’s because I let you score so people keep singing your name!”
“But honestly I can’t wait to see you my friend.”
“I can’t wait to see you all at Old Trafford, so I’ll be there on Saturday, see you soon!”
The game will kick off at 12:45 BST.
