Bruno Fernandes continues to command the spotlight at Manchester United, not just for his influence on the pitch but also for the persistent interest from Saudi Arabia. According to TalkSport, Al Hilal were prepared to pay more than £80million if the player had been open to a move, although all parties deny the existence of a £60m release clause.
The 30-year-old was tempted by the opportunity but after speaking to his family “decided to do at least one more season with Manchester United.” With a World Cup on the horizon, Fernandes judged it was wiser to remain in Europe, especially as this could be his final appearance at the tournament.
He made his stance clear during the international break in June when he revealed, “There was an opportunity. The [Al Hilal] president called me and asked if I wanted to go there. They were waiting for me. I spoke to coach Amorim. He asked me not to go. Manchester United didn’t want to sell me. They don’t need the money. If I had wanted to leave, they would have made it happen.”

While Fernandes has rebuffed overtures, Saudi interest remains fierce. TalkSport report that he was even approached informally by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr in late July. Ronaldo, now directly involved in Nassr’s recruitment “after extending his contract with the club,” was understood to have spoken with Fernandes himself. Yet the United captain reaffirmed his commitment to stay in Europe for at least another year.
Saudi champions Al Ittihad also made contact before the Premier League transfer window closed. They were hampered by a full foreign quota, which forced them to prioritise the signing of Braga’s Roger Fernandes. Reports suggest there was also speculation around departures for Fabinho or N’Golo Kante, but both remain at the club.
Despite Fernandes’ decision, Manchester United may be tempted to sell in summer 2026. TalkSport point out that interest in Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba could push United towards a major reshuffle, with any deal expected to exceed £100m.
Saudi clubs have largely treated September 1 as their own unofficial deadline when chasing European stars, recognising that Premier League sides are reluctant to part with key players once replacements cannot be sourced. For now, Fernandes is not expected to leave Old Trafford, even if a surprise late offer arrives.
Fernandes has made it clear that while he is open to Saudi Arabia in the future, his immediate focus remains firmly at Old Trafford. As he told TalkSport sources directly, “Manchester United didn’t want to sell me. They don’t need the money.” His leadership, creativity and relentless drive will again define United’s season, though the lure of a lucrative final chapter abroad will hover over his next contract cycle.
Manchester United fans will be relieved that Fernandes has chosen to stay for at least another year. At 30, he is still the heartbeat of Erik ten Hag’s midfield and without him United would lack leadership and vision. Supporters will point out that his decision reflects both loyalty and ambition, particularly with a World Cup on the horizon.
There is, however, an undercurrent of scepticism among fans. Many are concerned that Saudi clubs will return stronger in 2026 with offers too substantial to resist, both for the player and for United. The mention of Brighton’s Carlos Baleba as a £100m target has also sparked debate. Can United really justify investing that heavily when Fernandes is still performing at such a high level?
Some will be disappointed by the constant speculation, feeling it unsettles the squad and distracts from on-field priorities. Others are shocked that Cristiano Ronaldo is actively recruiting former teammates to Saudi football, showing just how serious that project has become.
Overall, the fanbase remains expectant. Fernandes is staying, but questions linger over how long the captain can continue resisting both the financial pull of Saudi Arabia and the strategic needs of his own club. For now, the message is clear: United have their leader for one more season, but his long-term future is far from guaranteed.
