The United States has tightened immigrant visa rules, extending restrictions to 75 countries five months before the World Cup.

The White House said on Wednesday that nationals from those countries can no longer apply for immigrant visas, a move that could complicate plans for supporters travelling to the tournament in the United States from 11 June to 19 July.

Tourist and business visas are not affected, which suggests most football supporters are not affected.

Among the countries concerned, 15 have qualified for the finals, namely Algeria, Brazil, Cape Verde, Colombia, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana, Haiti, Iran, Jordan, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Senegal, Tunisia and Uruguay.

The State Department is reevaluating immigration processing procedures to prevent entry by foreign nationals who would draw on public and social benefits.
