“Unlikely” Chelsea loan turns to sale after yet another injury setback

The majority of Chelsea’s loans this season have not really taken off, and one seems to be going sour rapidly after a bright start.

Aaron Anselmino had the perfect chance to make an instant impact at Dortmund, who were missing several defenders when the youngster arrived for the season. After impressing in his first weeks, there was already talk of them wanting to sign him permanently. But rather than seize the opportunity, he’s joined them on the side-line.

Aaron Anselmino signs for Borussia Dortmund on loan.

He slotted right into their team to face Union Berlin after arriving, but picked up an injury which meant he was taken off after 78 minutes. It was only a minor issue, and he was expected back soon. But he then had another problem, and today it seems he’s picked up a third.

BuLi News claim he’s had another setback “and will remain out for the foreseeable future.”

He will miss “at least” the Champions League game Dortmund have this week, as well as their Bundesliga game this weekend against RB Leipzig.

To make things worse, all this time out is giving more time for the German club to restore their defensive options. A permanent move for Anselmino is considered “increasingly doubtful” due to his “apparent susceptibility to injuries.”

Chelsea’s long and medium term plan for defender

We’re not sure Chelsea’s plan was ever to sell Anselmino right away anyway – we think they’re hoping that he’s going to develop into a first team option. But at this rate, he’s not going to be developing into anything.

If he gets fit and can’t get into the team, a January recall doesn’t seem off the cards at all, especially if Chelsea are still short at the back at that point.
