Real Sociedad and Spain international midfielder, Martín Zubimendi has responded to questions on his future and links to Manchester City.

Reports from Spain earlier this month claimed that the 25-year-old had become a transfer target for Manchester City, who remain in the process of weighing up their options amid the long-term absence to Rodri through a serious knee injury.

It is claimed that the Premier League champions want to take advantage of the fact that Zubimendi has not yet signed a renewal with Real Sociedad and therefore maintains a €60 million release clause in his current agreement.

Whilst Manchester City are not known for doing major business in January markets, the same report suggested that those within the club had not yet ruled out the possibility of a move for the player in winter.

Now speaking during a recent press conference whilst away on international duty with the Spanish national team, Zubimendi was quizzed on recent transfer rumours linking him with interest from Manchester City.

Zubimendi explained in response, “Until now I have thought that the best thing was to be at my club (Real Sociedad).”

He continued, “I am looking for my personal growth and I still have a lot to give to Real. There are always rumours but so far I’ve always thought that the best solution for me is staying at Real Sociedad.

“I’ve still a lot of things to give to this club, I still wanna grow and develop here.”

With the January transfer window still several weeks away, Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff will continue to source solutions to Rodri’s role, including the likes of Mateo Kovacic and Ilkay Gundogan operating alongside Rico Lewis and Manuel Akanji stepping out of defence.

But should Guardiola and his colleagues within the Etihad Stadium feel there is a need for further depth and options in the centre of the park, then the likes of Zubimendi could be seriously considered by the club.

Elsewhere and Torino’s Samuele Ricci, Atalanta’s Ederson, and Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella have also been linked with potential Manchester City interest via various sources within the Italian press in recent weeks.
