Manchester United loaned-out striker Rasmus Hojlund has been viciously reminded of the horrors he endured at Old Trafford.

The Premier League giants signed the Danish international from Atalanta in the summer of 2023, splashing a whopping £72 million for his services.

However, the 23-year-old endured two difficult years at Carrington, especially last season, when he only scored four goals in the Premier League. Hojlund was often berated by pundits for his shortcomings in front of goal.

Rasmus Hojlund beams after winning Italian Super Cup

After signing Benjamin Sesko last summer, Hojlund was placed on the transfer list. A host of Serie A suitors circled, but it was Napoli who launched the onslaught after losing Romelu Lukaku to a serious injury.

The Italian champions signed the Dane on loan with an option to buy that could turn into an obligation under certain circumstances. Nevertheless, most sources believe that the Partenopei have already made up their minds, intending to keep the player beyond the current campaign.

On Monday, Hojlund won his first trophy in Italian football, as Napoli clinched the Italian Super Cup in Riyadh after beating Bologna in the final, thanks to a brace from David Neres.

Enthralled by his achievement, the Dane couldn’t help but aim a not-so-subtle dig at Man Utd, by posting a photo of himself with the trophy on Instagram, alongside the cheeky caption: “What a great decision looks like”.

Hojlund reminded of his Man United woes

Hojlund’s gloating didn’t sit too well with a section for the Man Utd supporters, as his shortcomings remain fresh in their minds.

For his part, former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan ripped into the striker, by describing him as ‘useless’ during his time at Man Utd.

“He was useless for Man United, wasn’t he?” said the pundit during his appearance on talkSPORT.

I mean, he scored some more goals with Napoli, but it would have been difficult for him to score less than he’s been scoring in recent times.

“I thought he looked completely out of sorts, as a player. He looked miles off.”

Jordan also argued that it is easier for players to find success in other leagues, as the Premier League remains the most difficult. He also applied the same logic to explain the exploits of other former Man Utd stars, particularly Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that Hojlund’s scoring stats haven’t only improved on the domestic stage since joining Napoli, but also in the Champions League, and even on the international level with Denmark.
