Real Madrid are sounding out candidates for the head coach role this summer, with uncertainty around Alvaro Arbeloa’s prospects of keeping the job beyond this season. Doubts are said to be growing in the dressing room and the presidential box over his suitability as a long-term solution.
According to ESPN, Mauricio Pochettino is on Madrid’s shortlist as they test alternatives to Arbeloa. The report says Arbeloa would need a miracle to remain and he could be offered another role at the club.
Jurgen Klopp is the name most heavily linked, although there are doubts he would end his retirement. Unai Emery and Maximiliano Allegri have also been mentioned, with Allegri previously in contention in 2021 after Zinedine Zidane left.
The 54-year-old is out of contract after this summer’s World Cup, which he will lead the USMNT into. He has been in charge for the past two years and has also been linked with a return to Tottenham Hotspur.
Pochettino made his name at Espanyol in La Liga before a successful spell at Tottenham. His most recent tenures at Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea were considered underwhelming.
