Vahid Halilhodzic used his Friday press conference to question FC Nantes’ structure and leadership, pointedly avoiding naming president Waldemar Kita, as his side prepare to host Brest on Sunday at 17:15.

According to L'Équipe, a late question about the first team’s recurring problems, despite strong results for the U18s and the women’s side, drew a blunt response. After a nervous laugh, the 73-year-old, who returned on 10 March to replace Ahmed Kantari, noted that the issues echoed those that led to his previous departure.

He left Nantes on 2 August 2019 to take charge of Morocco, having arrived on 2 October 2018, amid strained relations with Kita, who remains president and owner. In a later interview with the same outlet, he said he quit over disagreements with the club’s sporting policy, citing a lack of coaching influence and widespread improvisation and incompetence.

This time his tone was more measured, but he revisited the club’s organisation. He said a top-level club needs the right people, with the right expertise, in the right roles, for coaching and for leadership. He added he knows exactly what must be done and stressed that competence and presence are required.

While he did not name Waldemar or Franck Kita, relations have long been frosty. Halilhodzic has repeatedly said he took on this risky survival mission from retirement solely because it is Nantes, the club where he shone as a striker in the 1980s, for the institution rather than individuals.
