Valencia will play their 3,000th LaLiga match on Tuesday when they face RCD Mallorca, a landmark moment for the Mestalla club. It comes despite years in which the team have battled the effects of a self-defeating stewardship.
Superdeporte notes the achievement underlines Valencia’s stature and their prominent role in Spanish football history.
Their first top-flight game was on 22 November 1931 at Sarriá against RCD Espanyol. A week later they played their first home fixture in the division at Mestalla, beating Real Unión de Irún 5-1.
Since then, Valencia have left the division only once, for a single season in the 1980s. Supporters hope Meriton’s management does not see a repeat.
From those early days, Valencia have won 1,303 LaLiga matches. The all-time table lists Real Madrid on 3,097 games and 5,113 points, Barcelona on 3,097 and 5,016, and Athletic Club on 3,097 and 3,843. Valencia stand on 2,999 and 3,836, with Atlético de Madrid on 2,949 and 4,110.
