Real Madrid announced on that Fede Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni have each been fined €500,000 following an internal disciplinary process.
The amount is believed to be unprecedented in the club’s history, although neither player has received a sporting suspension.
Tensions between the pair reportedly escalated after an altercation during Wednesday’s match, before boiling over again in training on Thursday. According to reports, Valverde accused Tchouaméni of leaking details of the dispute to the media.
Accounts of the incident vary, but the Uruguay international was later taken to hospital after suffering a blow to the head. Valverde required stitches and was diagnosed with concussion symptoms.
Despite the incident, Real Madrid decided not to hand either player a sporting punishment. Tchouaméni will therefore remain available for this weekend’s El Clásico against Barcelona, while Valverde is expected to be sidelined for up to two weeks through injury.
Sunday’s clash could prove decisive in the LaLiga title race, with Barcelona needing only a draw to secure the championship.
In an official statement, Real Madrid confirmed both players had apologised to each other, the club, their team-mates, coaching staff and supporters before the fines were issued.
