Vincent Kompany has spoken out clearly on the VAR debate ahead of FC Bayern’s Bundesliga clash with Werder Bremen – and taken a clear stance. While discussions about the video assistant regularly boil over in Germany, the Bayern coach sees no reason for fundamental criticism

„I don’t think it’s particularly bad in Germany,“ emphasized the 39-year-old ahead of the north-south clash. Kompany referred to his experiences in Belgium and the Premier League: „In the leagues in Belgium and England, it took much longer for decisions to be made during my time there. I don’t think the VAR interrupts the flow of the game too much here.“

The issue had flared up again following the recent discussions surrounding controversial scenes – for example in the DFB Cup. Kompany showed understanding for the frustration of many fans, but put the problem into perspective

„You see a clip at full speed and then it is slowed down frame by frame so that you suddenly get different images. That makes for different opinions,“ explained the Belgian. The variety of perspectives and slow motion inevitably leads to more intense debates – not necessarily to more mistakes

Kompany: „I’m in favor of using the technology“

For Kompany, one thing is certain: technology is now part of modern soccer. „The technology is available to us. I am always someone who is in favour of using technology and making the best of it,“ he said. At the same time, he admitted that there is potential for optimization: „Of course, you always have to tweak the processes.“

While there are heated discussions about the VAR elsewhere, Kompany remains true to his line: sober, analytical, solution-oriented. For him, the video assistant is not a disruptive factor, but a tool – and one that apparently works more efficiently in Germany than is claimed in many places internationally.
