Vasco’s dressing room turned tense at São Januário after the 3-0 Brasileirão loss to Bragantino, a result that left the side back on the brink of the Z-4 and raised concerns over Renato Gaúcho’s staff.
According to Globo.com, Renato was jeered by home fans as he left the pitch and was deeply unhappy with his players’ display. The coaching staff viewed it as a second straight league outing marked by apathy that helped produce a heavy defeat.
A post-match meeting lasted more than an hour and included president Pedrinho. The tone was demanding, with players accepting responsibility. Thiago Mendes and Léo Jardim led the discussion in search of solutions.
Alan Saldivia was among the most vocal, taking blame in front of team-mates. He is regarded positively internally for not shying away during pressure.
With Renato still angry, there was concern about his news conference and the possibility of an on-air resignation, as had happened with Fluminense in September last year. Several players, including Thiago Mendes, offered to face the media, but the captain was chosen alongside director Admar Lopes.
Renato confirmed he is staying and is set to lead Monday’s session at CT Moacyr Barbosa. In a social media post, he called it a lamentable night, said nothing went to plan and that a home chance to climb the table was missed, adding the focus now is on working, targeting Sudamericana progression on Wednesday, then Sunday’s home league match.
