Vasco da Gama beat Grêmio 2-1 at São Januário to rise to ninth in the Brasileirão, as the visitors drop to eighth.
In the seventh minute, Cuiabano arrived from left-back to lash into the top left after a fast break, and VAR confirmed the goal. David then finished from close range (34.) from Cuiabano's pass.
Carlos Vinícius pulled one back with a tidy finish from Juan Nardoni's assist (38.), but Vasco held firm thereafter.
After the restart, Vasco sat deeper and looked to counter. Andrés Gómez struck the right post soon after a breakaway, while Léo Jardim denied Martin Braithwaite late on to preserve the points.
An extended first half featured eight minutes of stoppage time before the interval.
Vasco produced nine attempts with five on target, making the most of 37.1% possession. The Tricolor Gaúcho controlled 62.9% of the ball and slung in 20 crosses but managed only three shots on target.
