Vasco da Gama are moving urgently to appoint Fernando Diniz’s successor, with the club bottom of the Campeonato Brasileiro after four rounds and at a disadvantage in the Campeonato Carioca semi-final. President Pedrinho’s board want a heavyweight to deliver an immediate tactical reset and restore order on the pitch.
According to PaponaColina, the unanimous choice at São Januário is Portuguese coach Artur Jorge, now at Al-Rayyan. Talks are complicated, as he has expressed a desire to honour his Qatar contract through June 2027 after assembling the squad he wanted. Despite a statement that he will remain, some directors think that, if continental results go against him and he is dismissed, a deal could become easier, though Vasco may not have time to wait.
With plan A difficult, Renato Gaúcho has emerged as a concrete option. The free agent has given positive signals to Vasco’s interest and could receive fresh contact in the coming days. He is viewed as viable given his knowledge of Rio football and his longstanding status as a Pedrinho target.
Marcelo Gallardo is considered a distant dream. Although he bade farewell to River Plate on Thursday to a rousing ovation at the Monumental de Núñez, those close to him suggest he does not plan to take a job immediately, preferring a break after his Argentine cycle.
The hierarchy agree the appointment must be swift to stop the crisis deepening in the Brasileirão. Until a new coach arrives, the squad remains under the permanent staff’s supervision, with a resolution sought before the upcoming decisive rounds. The brief is to organise the defence and establish a clear style of play.
