Renato Gaúcho starts his third stint in charge of Vasco on Thursday 12, debuting against Palmeiras at São Januário in the Campeonato Brasileiro. The fixture also reunites him with left-back Cuiabano.
According to PaponaColina, the defender was blooded in the first team by Renato at Grêmio at the start of 2023, yet he never nailed down a starting spot and spent much of the year on the bench.
Competition was fierce. Reinaldo, now at Mirassol, held the role as the side finished the season as national runners-up, then the arrival of Mayk pushed the academy product to third choice. With opportunities scarce, he joined Botafogo for around R$ 8 million, a move not opposed by the staff.
That switch transformed his trajectory. He impressed immediately and was central to the campaigns that delivered the Libertadores da América and the 2024 Campeonato Brasileiro titles. His form prompted a transfer to Nottingham Forest, a brief loan back to Botafogo in the second half of last year, then a return to Brazil for the current campaign.
Cuiabano, wearing number 66, arrived at São Januário in February on loan from the English club until the end of 2026. He has made two appearances for Vasco, coming on for Lucas Piton in the second half against Santos and Fluminense.
Renato must now choose his left-back for Palmeiras, weighing the newcomer against the experienced Piton. The number six is among the squad’s longest-serving players, having joined at the start of 2023.
