According to PaponaColina, Vasco da Gama have made an initial enquiry for Martin Braithwaite, 34, who is on Grêmio’s books.
The Rio club are treating it as a sounding rather than a bid, but Grêmio are not expected to block an exit as they reassess finances and look to trim a wage that exceeds R$ one million a month.
Vasco’s football department see two key hurdles before moving. First, Braithwaite is recovering from surgery on the left Achilles tendon and, though due back in the coming weeks, would need thorough medical clearance.
Second, there is competition. Botafogo are also monitoring the Dane, a local battle that could push up a deal that might otherwise be straightforward.
The approach comes as Vasco remodel their attack. This window has already brought Brenner, Marino Hinestroza and Argentine Claudio Spinelli, a direct replacement for Vegetti, and Braithwaite would add international experience.
Despite the fitness uncertainty and a claim for overdue payments in the south, Braithwaite produced when available, with 23 goals and five assists in 55 games for Grêmio. His ability to play as a focal point or second striker aligns with Fernando Diniz’s demand for mobility.
