Vasco have submitted a written defence for head coach Renato Gaúcho in Conmebol’s disciplinary case after he did not travel for last week’s Copa Sudamericana opener against Barracas Central.
Globo.com reports that the confederation opened proceedings to examine his conduct and the club met Wednesday’s deadline to file their arguments in a bid to avoid sanctions.
The case cites Article 11 of the Conmebol Disciplinary Code on principles of conduct, covering unacceptable behaviour, insults towards the confederation, and actions that could bring football or Conmebol into disrepute.
Renato remained in Rio de Janeiro with the spine of the first team to avoid losing two days of training. The club’s stated priority is the Campeonato Brasileiro.
After Tuesday’s defeat to Chile’s Audax Italiano, a match marred by refereeing controversy, he took a sarcastic tone with Conmebol and questioned whether the body would address the officiating.
He added that Vasco went ahead, then lost a player in the first half and had to play with one fewer. He rejected excuses and said a late, naïve penalty cost them the game.
