Vasco opened their Copa Sul-Americana campaign with a 0-0 draw away to Barracas Central, using a largely reserve line-up. JP caught the eye.

According to Globo.com, youngsters Walace Falcão, JP and Riquelme Avellar started and impressed. With first-choice players rested, Renato Gaúcho did not travel to Buenos Aires.

JP dictated the tempo, evaded pressure and threaded passes, including for Marino Hinestroza’s second-half opening. He attempted 50 passes, 45 found their target, he drew three fouls and had four efforts on goal.

Avellar showed personality on the left, combining with Nuno Moreira to force a first-half save. At the back, Carlos Cuesta and Lucas Freitas were secure alongside Walace Falcão in a back three for the first time, important for Cuesta in his battle with Saldivia.

Hugo Moura produced a vital block to deny Tobio during the hosts’ only chance. He is competing directly with Cauan Barros, who started against Botafogo last Saturday. Up front, Spinelli battled well, threatened with a header and fed Adson, who shot poorly late on.

Not everyone seized the moment. Nuno Moreira and Puma Rodríguez underwhelmed from the start, while Hinestroza and Adson entered late but failed to take opportunities. The plan to crowd midfield before turning to pace in the second half had merit, but finishing let Vasco down.

Vasco visit Remo at the Mangueirão on Saturday at 16:30 Brasília time. With regulars rested, Renato Gaúcho’s side aim to return to winning ways in the Brasileirão after last weekend’s loss to Botafogo.
