Guglielmo Vicario has spoken about the togetherness and family vibe in the squad that he feels can take us places this season.
Our in-form number one helped see us to another clean sheet – a fourth in five this season – as we kicked-off our UEFA Champions League campaign with a 1-0 win against Villarreal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Back from international duty with Italy last week, Vic returned to domestic action by keeping West Ham out at London Stadium in a 3-0 win on Saturday as the 2025/26 campaign starts to take off – seven games in three competitions (Premier League, UCL, Carabao Cup) in 22 days before the next international break.
That’s why ‘Vic’ knows how important this togetherness is… “I can say, we have a great foundation here,” he told us after Villarreal. “This is my third season. I can see it now more clearly. Also ,what we've built throughout the last two (seasons), and this year we want to make another step.
“As I said, I think we have a great foundation, a big group of lads, everyone wants to contribute. Also, if you have to play 10 minutes, five minutes, everyone is very tuned in and this makes things easier for us. It's a big part. We are in the right direction.”
With so much experience, it was maybe a surprise that Villarreal represented Vic’s first appearance in the Champions League.
“It’s what you dream of since you are a kid, listening to the Champions League anthem gives goosebumps to everyone,” he said. “It was my first time, so at the beginning it was a little emotional, of course. We then went 1-0 up straight away, and then everything was, not easier, but we had the game in our hands and we handled it well for the 90 minutes.”
