Sunderland are drawing up summer plans after securing Premier League survival with wins over Leeds United and Newcastle United. Their pursuit of Osasuna winger Victor Munoz is set against a significant price tag.
El Pais reports that Sunderland had a €25m January bid turned down, the 22-year-old rejected a move, and he will only leave if his €40m release clause is met. The report adds that Real Madrid retain a 50% resale clause from his switch to Osasuna last summer.
Munoz, a Real Madrid academy graduate, received his first senior Spain call-up this month. He scored on debut in Friday’s friendly win over Serbia.
The reigning European champions face Egypt on Tuesday, and Munoz will hope to impress Luis de la Fuente again. A strong display could put him in contention for Spain’s World Cup finals squad in North America this summer, as La Roja chase a first global crown since 2010.
Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland have been one of this season’s Premier League stories after an ambitious summer laid the foundations for a striking return to the top flight. European qualification, which would be only the second in the club’s history, remains possible in the final weeks, and another lively window awaits whatever the run-in delivers.
