Robert Lewandowski made headlines on Barcelona’s long awaited return to the newly renovated Camp Nou wearing the captain’s armband for the first time since joining the club in 2022 and marking the occasion by scoring inside four minute against Athletic Bilbao on matchday 13 of La Liga.

A captain for the night and decisive from the start

Despite not being the longest serving Barcelona player on the pitch, Lewandowski led the team out as captain in Hansi Flick’s starting XI joining Lamine Yamal & Ferran Torres in the front line.

Just four minute into the match, he justified the honour. A sharp right footed finish past Unai Simon gave Barca the first goal at the "new" Camp Nou after nearly two year away from their iconic home.

First Barcelona opening goal at the new Camp Nou and only the second in history

Lewandowski became only the second player ever to score the opening goal at Camp Nou following reconstruction or major stadium change:

A historic milestones night for Lewandowski

The Polish legend continues to solidify his place among Europe’s most enduring scorers. His goal vs Athletic made him:

  • Level with Antonio Di Natale for goals scored in Europe’s top 5 league after turning 35.
  • Both now sit on 54 goal with Lewandowski doing it faster.

  • Robert Lewandowski — 54

A lethal scorer at Camp Nou

  • Matches at Camp Nou (26)

Matching Luis Enrique’s tally in half the games

With his goal against Athletic, Lewandowski reached:

He has now equalled Luis Enrique’s scoring tally for the club but did so in almost half the appearances:

  1. Robert Lewandowski 109 Goal 160 Match
  2. Luis Enrique 109 Goal 300 Match

A symbolic night for Barca and for their No9

On the night Barcelona returned home after extensive stadium renovations, Lewandowski delivered leadership & excellence wearing the armband for the first time scoring the first goal at the new Camp Nou and adding another chapter to his extraordinary goalscoring legacy.
