Chelsea’s Champions League game was on Tuesday night this week, giving us a chance on Wednesday to check out some of the future Blues who were in action in the same competition.

In Lisbon, Sporting CP were taking on Club Brugge, and future Chelsea winger Geovany Quenda got a start.

He played mainly really high and wide on the left, and terrorised the away team with his dribbling. He scored the opening goal for Sporting when he swivelled nicely to get a good shot away 180 degrees from where he had been facing.

In the second half, he added an assist and with a cross pulled back across the box for attacking midfielder Trincao to hit.

“A goal, the first for the Lions, and an assist for the third for Trincão earn him a high mark. During the match he showed that he is growing tactically, showing himself attentive to the combinations on the left flank,” was Portuguese football paper A Bola‘s report on his performance.

That was much improved on his last showing in that competition, against Juventus, where he really struggled. But wingers are always going to go through tough phases in games and between games, so this was no surprise. He’s playing more and more often and looks to be developing into a top player.

In other news…

Reece James was superb against Barcelona, and while he didn’t get many headlines, it was yet more proof of his superb return to the very top of the game, as his stats showed.

Estevao Willian stole the show in the game, and post match, Enzo Maresca was asked how he could keep leaving out the star winger from his Premier League teams.
