After laying it on thick pre-match, you just knew Jose Mourinho was itching for a chance to make himself the centre of attention tonight.
He didn’t have to wait long – when Chelsea got their first corner beneath the away fans, former Benfica man Enzo Fernandez went to take it and ended up showered with abuse – and objects – from the crowd.
Mourinho dashed down the touchline to theatrically tell his supporters to stop, weaving his way through the subs warming up to get in front of the away end and wave his hands around. Before long, they’d given up and play could resume.
You’d think those supporters would be more generous – we gave them £105m for a player they’d only had on the books for 6 months. It’s hardly like they can blame Enzo (who helped put them on course for a title before he went) either.
Still, football fans are just funny like that. If you leave, you’re the enemy, even if the move benefits everyone involved. Let’s hope it’s the last time we see Mourinho powering down the touchline tonight – just imagine if Benfica score a late equaliser. It would be hard to watch.
Pedro Neto with Georgiy Sudakov.
That wasn’t the only funny moment in the first half. Pedro Neto had a great first period, helping create Chelsea’s goal by picking out Alejandro Garnacho’s run and constantly menacing down the right hand side. In one moment he ended up tangling with Georgiy Sudakov, the pair of them ending up in an unintentional embrace as they slid together across the slick pitch.
They both ended up hugging on the ground with big smiles on their faces.
