Chelsea are ahead at Stamford Bridge!
It’s an own goal off the foot of Richard Rios, but in reality it was all down to a great cross from the right from Pedro Neto.
He picked out Alejandro Garnacho coming in at the far post in acres of space. Garnacho slid in and was able to direct the cross back across goal where the retreating Rios ended up slamming it into his own net.
Neto and Garnacho had been our brightest sparks so far, and hopefully they can continue causing danger. Benfica are struggling to contain them and their hard work out wide.
Chelsea had not started well. They made 5 changes to this game and don’t look confident at all – they had barely created a chance until this goal. Hopefully it inspires them to feel a little more confident. They really need a good home result, and this is the perfect situation in which to get it.

It was a lovely cross from Neto and a good run from Garnacho – certainly it was an own goal which was “earned.” But Chelsea can’t rest easy now, and they would do well to remember how little they were creating and how much more dangerous the away team were looking before this moment.
The game should play into our hands now, with plenty of counter-attacking threat on the pitch. We just need to make sure we don’t get more and more defensive as the game goes on. That’s what’s been an issue for us in recent weeks.
Oh, and let’s not get a red card either please.
