Incident reignites discussion over fan hostility and racism in Spanish football

(Video) Vinicius Junior clashes with Rayo fans in fiery La Liga draw
Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior found himself once again at the center of controversy during his team’s frustrating 0-0 draw with Rayo Vallecano on Sunday in matchweek 12 of La Liga as tensions between the Brazilian and opposition fans resurfaced.
During the second half at Estadio de Vallecas, television cameras from Movistar+ captured Vinicius exchanging gestures with sections of the home crowd as Rayo prepared to take throw-in.
The 24 year old winger appeared to make hand motion toward the stands prompting immediate chorus of jeers & insults from Rayo supporters.
"You paid to watch me"
before letting out sarcastic laugh.
This is far from first time the Brazilian faced abuse or provocation from opposition fans.
Last season he subjected to racist chants at several stadiums across Spain prompting widespread condemnation from global players unions and even statements from FIFA and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
While the league has since implemented stricter anti-racism measures, Sunday’s exchange in Vallecas shows that hostility toward Vinicius remains sensitive issue.
