Genoa head coach Patrick Vieira believes his side deserved more against AC Milan, but that substitutions made the difference.

In truth, few could argue with the scoreboard when Vitinha ghosted into the box to volley the home side into the lead in the second half, as the Rossoblu had appeared to want it more despite having little to play for.

However, Sergio Conceicao shook things up with some changes and it paid dividends. Joao Felix and Santiago Gimenez combined to set up Rafael Leao for the equalising goal, then Leao’s cut-back was about to be fired in by Felix before Frendrup turned it into his own net.

For the Rossoblu the priority was to secure safety comfortably after an awful start to the season, which they did, but they are still to beat a team playing in the top half of the table this season.

Vieira spoke to DAZN after the conclusion of the game to share his analysis on what was a good performance from his side with a bitter ending.

“We played 75 minutes at a high level. We played a game with intensity, we prepared it well. I’m sorry, we deserved more because we played a great game. We deserved to take at least one point tonight,” he said (via MilanPress).

“Maignan was the best player tonight, it means we played the right game. We lacked quality and concentration, but we also suffered physically in the last minutes.

“I asked the players to have the responsibility to finish the season well, to continue to show that we are a real team. The game we played tonight shows that we have a group with responsibility, that wants to finish well.”
