Villarreal manager Marcelino expressed his frustration following his team’s 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid, criticising key refereeing decisions that he believes influenced the match.
The Yellow Submarine’s boss took aim at Guillermo Cuadra Fernandez, who awarded a penalty against Villarreal and sent off Santiago Mourino for two yellow cards.
During his post-match press conference, Marcelino was cautious when discussing the referee. “I don’t know. I’m not going to talk about the referee,” he said initially when questioned.
However, he later admitted that he “didn’t like the refereeing at all,” while keeping a sense of irony, stating, “something could have happened, right?”
He also responded indirectly to Santi Comesana’s comments, in which the midfielder criticised the referee for making it “even more difficult” to win at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Marcelino explained, “That’s his opinion. Even if you ask me 200 questions about the referee, I’m not going to talk. It’s not my place. But… something could have happened, right?”

Marcelino highlighted the impact of the crucial decisions. “In football terms, penalties give them an advantage when the game is tied.
“You make it easier for the opponent to take the lead. The second yellow card? Let the CTA come and explain; I’m sure everything was fine,” he said.
Despite his concerns about the refereeing, Marcelino admitted that Real Madrid deserved to win, but emphasised that certain moments changed the course of the match.
“Real Madrid deserved to win this match, but there were also specific moments when the game turned around,” he admitted
He pointed to the early goal by Vinícius Jr., which shifted momentum in Madrid’s favour. However, he also ended up praising the Real Madrid forward. “He is a, great footballer like many from Real Madrid.”
Overall, Marcelino remained critical of how his team started the game but accepted that individual plays and decisions played a significant role in the 3-1 result.
