Villarreal climb above Atlético Madrid to third despite Getafe defeat | OneFootball

Villarreal ended the weekend third in LaLiga, moving above Atlético Madrid despite defeat at Getafe, and they also have a game in hand.

Atlético lost 3-0 at Butarque to Rayo Vallecano, which pushed them behind on goal difference. As reported by El Periódico Mediterráneo, Villarreal's journey home on Saturday night was disrupted by turbulence and high winds.

The squad reached Miralcamp at around 22.00 after a bumpy landing in Valencia, then a windswept coach ride to the capital of la Plana. The press coach had to stop when a headlight and a right-side part broke.

On Sunday the team completed their usual recovery session, reviewing the Getafe defeat and preparing to face Levante on Wednesday at 20.00 at the Ciutat de València. The fixture was postponed in December because of a weather alert.

With only two days to go, away tickets remain on sale for Levante v Villarreal. Around 700 groguets had been expected for the original date, but the midweek slot prompted many to return theirs.

One caveat on the numbers, Espanyol’s goal at Villarreal came at 4-0 with the contest already decided. Even so, the run is now 12 matches without a clean sheet, equalling last season, and three away trips without a win more than a year on.
