Villarreal completed a double session on Wednesday then switched off for four days, with non-internationals off until Monday, when they resume at the José Manuel Llaneza complex to prepare Girona away at Montilivi.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the standout news is Ayoze Pérez rejoining group work after a muscle injury sustained in the defeat to Barcelona. He missed the next three league matches and, if there are no setbacks, Marcelino could call on him. The forward has only two goals this season, compared with 19 in the league last term, when he won his first Zarra.

Willy Kambwala has medical clearance but is yet to play following his serious injury. Logan Costa is closer, already training with the squad and could be available in April after a cruciate ligament rupture in pre-season.

Eight players are away on international duty: Alex Freeman with the United States, Thomas Partey with Ghana, Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi with Canada, Renato Veiga with Portugal, Georges Mikautadze with Georgia, Pape Gueye with Senegal and Nicolas Pepe with Ivory Coast.

Mikautadze is first up, Georgia facing Israel on Thursday at 18.00 in Tbilisi. The schedule also brings the United States against Belgium and Portugal in Atlanta, Ghana meeting Austria and Germany, Canada hosting Iceland and Tunisia in Toronto, Portugal visiting Mexico then the United States, Georgia travelling to Lithuania, Senegal playing Peru then Gambia, and Ivory Coast taking on South Korea and Scotland in England.
