Both teams are fighting for European spots after a strong start to the season (Saturday, 6:30pm CEST)

Villarreal CF and Real Betis will face each other this Saturday at 6:30pm CEST at the Estadio de la Cerámica. The clash between the Yellows and the Andalusian side, corresponding to Matchday 9 of LALIGA EA Sports, promises to be an exciting contest, full of tempo and attacking intent, featuring two talented teams with attractive and offensive styles of play. It is a true battle for Europe between two clubs currently occupying UEFA Champions League places and sharing the same continental ambitions.

Marcelino’s side have enjoyed an impressive start to the season. Villarreal are third in the table, behind only Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. They have collected 16 points, with a record of five wins, one draw and just two defeats. Those losses came away at challenging venues such as the Santiago Bernabéu and the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, and even in those matches the Yellow Submarine had opportunities to come away with points.

For their part, Betis occupy the final place that grants access to the Champions League. They are only one point behind the Yellows, having won four matches, drawn three and lost only once in this opening phase of the competition.

Marcelino surpasses Pellegrini as the coach with the most matches in charge

Football is full of these coincidences. Marcelino García Toral will become, with 260 matches, the Villarreal CF head coach with the most games in the top flight in the club’s history. He will reach this milestone precisely against Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis, the man who previously held that honour in the Yellow Submarine’s record books.

While the Asturian surpasses the Chilean, Pellegrini, who already wrote a golden chapter in Villarreal CF’s history, is now building his legacy at the Andalusian club. Just two weeks ago, Pellegrini became the coach with the most matches in Real Betis’ history.

Villarreal and Betis: a thrilling and familiar battle for Europe

In recent seasons, meetings between Villarreal and Betis have been synonymous with goals and entertainment. These have been high-intensity fixtures between two teams fighting for the same objectives. Last season, the Andalusian side won 1-2 at the Estadio de la Cerámica thanks to goals from Vitor Roque and Lo Celso. Baena pulled one back for Villarreal, but it was not enough to secure a point.

The second meeting between the sides last season was a very different story. At the Benito Villamarín, Villarreal brought an end to Real Betis’ impressive two-month unbeaten run, with the Andalusian side chasing the Yellow Submarine in the league standings. The 1-2 victory at the Betis fortress proved to be a major morale boost for Marcelino’s team. Thanks to goals from Barry and Ayoze, the Yellows climbed the table and secured fifth place, which granted access to the UEFA Champions League.

As for matches against Betis specifically at the Estadio de la Cerámica, the Yellow Submarine have not beaten the Andalusian side since the 2021/22 season, when they won 2-0. Since then, there has been a 1-1 draw and two consecutive 2-1 defeats, in what has always been a fiercely competitive and unpredictable fixture.

Shoot-out between Georges Mikautadze and Cucho Hernández

Both Pellegrini’s and Marcelino’s sides boast players of great quality, especially in the attacking areas. Up front, the form of their two No.9s stands out: Cucho Hernández and Georges Mikautadze. The Colombian has scored four goals in as many matches, while the Georgian has registered three goals — one of them in the Champions League — and one assist since his arrival in Spain.

The magic of Nicolas Pépé and the talent of Antony

Another standout duel between both teams comes on the right wing. Nicolas Pépé and Antony are two of the most talented players in LALIGA EA Sports. The Ivorian forward is one of the most in-form players in the competition, having scored two goals and provided two assists, one of them in the UEFA Champions League. Antony, who arrived at the end of the transfer window, is looking to rediscover the level that thrilled Heliópolis last season.
